Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: The place was very cosy and, once the heating was on, was nice and warm. My children loved the hobbit-like feel of it with the mezanine floor providing an upstairs bedroom area with the ceiling being just high enough for them (age 5/6). Probably worth mentioning that for anyone with mobility issues or back problems (and the like), the bed area would be extremely difficult to access. This is not a negative point, but one that just needs to be made clear to avoid disappointment on arrival. Lovely views from the area and clearly much loved children lived at the property.

Negative: I really want to score the place more highly because it had a nice feel to it, but from the start it was very stressful as I was receiving no replies from the owners to my emails, messages and phone calls regarding key collection. We arrived at a fairly remote area and the door number that was provided appeared to be someone else's property. I tried the doorbell, but there was no answer. We were getting a bit panicky because it was cold, we had just driven for 6 hours with 3 young children and we had no idea how to get in or even where the place was. Eventually I spotted a random dog walker who was coming down a wooded track and he was obviously familiar with people arriving and looking lost, so he pointed to a gate that was around the rear of a small collection of doors and garages. I rang a bell but no answer, in the end I dubiously opened the gate and walked down the steps to a courtyard where there were washing lines with children's clothes hanging, and toys on the ground. It all felt very intrusive of me but still there was no one there. After going up and down I finally saw a glass door with a key sticking out. It was one of a few doors and looked to be private, but I was panicking at this stage so I tried it and it opened. Even a post-it note with my name on it would have been helpful and easy enough to do. I had no idea where to go once we had parked up. Once in I sadly then discovered that the cutlery drawer was full of mouse droppings and the pans were dirty from other people's food. (I hope this review doesn't prompt them to lay mouse traps as that would be very upsetting. Simply cleaning and blocking any entrances would work just fine). The fridge also didn't appear to work but we manged to sort that out. Again, though, no information was provided.

Summary: Cosy little place, sadly lacked any communication from owners.
