There are many parks found in Cyprus; however, it is the Troodos Forest that was declared the National forest park of Cyprus. Other National Forest Parks of Cyprus are Cavo Gkreko, Potamos tou Liopetriou, Athalassa National Forest Park and the parks in Tripilos, Mavroi and Kremmoi.

The reason the Troodos Forest was declared National park of Cyprus is because it is the most geological and morphological feature that is found on the island. The main aim to declare Troodos forest the national park was to safeguard its rational use while perpetuating the values ecological, recreational, hydrological, scientific and economic functions of the area.

You find many large streams of Cyprus springing from the Troodos forest. In fact, there is no other forest that has as many water springs as Troodos forest does. Most of the villages of Cyprus have their water sources emerging from the 50 springs found in the Troodos forest. The ‘Arkolachania’ is considered to be the spring with the biggest flow of water. The main use of the forest lies in the infiltration and purification of all the precipitated water found in underground reservoirs.

The forests of Troodos National Forest Park have various species of plants and trees in them. In fact, to date, the total varieties of plants found in the park approaches 750 of which 72 are endemic to Cyprus. And of these 72, 12 are exclusive to the park, and cannot be found anywhere else in Cyprus or the world, for that matter! This is the reason Troodos is called a botanical heaven and one of the most important sources of flora in Europe.
